Replace a Light Switch
There are 3 important steps to replace a light switch:
- Make sure the power is turned off to the circuit on which you are working. Use a voltage meter or non-contact voltage tester to verify there is no power to the switch or outlet.
- Unscrew old light switch from electrical cover and remove wires one at a time and mark to insure proper placement on new switch. A single pole switch controls one light from one switch. A three-way switch controls one light from two switches, for example the top and bottom of a flight of stairs.
- Insert wires in back or switch or wrap clockwise around the correct screws. When wires have been connected to new switch wrap contacts with electrical tape if using screws.
