Stain Your Deck - Great Lakes Ace Hardware Store

There are 3 important steps to staining your deck:

  1. Prepare the deck by cleaning it prior to staining. Always use a top quality deck wash or wood cleaner. Make sure to rinse thoroughly with clean water and let dry for 2 to 3 days. Sand smooth any rough spots and tighten up any loose fasteners. If the deck boards are nailed down, hammering them back down will eliminate any safety hazards.
  2. Apply stain when air and wood surface temperatures are between 50° - 90°F. Avoid applying in direct sunlight or if rain is in the forecast over the next 12-24 hours. Use a natural bristle brush for best results.
  3. Stain the open-end grain of the boards first then brush 2-3 boards at a time from one end to the other in long smooth strokes. To avoid lap marks, make sure to keep a “wet edge” and brush the wet stain into the “wet edge”.
